The book had some great action and dialogue even with plot inconsistencies (i.e. Darcey hs a recollection of her daughter coloring with books and crayons while her husband was alive, yet in the beginning of the book it stated he died when her daughter was an infant, NOT a toddler). Also, her instincts as a Mom were seriously off. She knowingly takes double anti-anxiety meds that render her unable to function while she's trying to protect her kids and home with a firearm, she leaves her young teen daughter overnight with a man she barely knows, and she regularly lets her kids leave the house on their own at night when there is a rapist and a serial killer out there. I wouldn't let this woman dog sit my pet, let along watch over a family. But the biggest points off for this story is a cliff hanger ending. I won't be buying the next one. I enjoy a fast, action-packed read and this was one that ranks high in both. The part that bugged me and will cause me to not read the next one was that the protagonist had the most unreliable personality, which I think was the result of the author’s lack of maternal instinct knowledge, or the author was just rushing to make a nail biter. Protagonist leaves her kids alone at the most risky times, and with strangers. No half-normal mother would leave her 14 year old daughter over night with a man she’d just met who wasn’t her boyfriend. And other plot inconsistencies like it was a full moon but then a moment later she’s running through the park and it’s too dark to see. And a supposedly excellent profiler FBI agent who misses so much. Just so many question marks flying before my eyes the whole time I’m reading. The author has enviable writing and storytelling skills though. I hope he learns to make more reliable characters.I won’t read another about Darcy unless she dies, which will be her just dessert for being such an idiot all the time. Five stars for the fast action, one star for the unreliable protagonist- 3 stars overall.
