Ebook About
New York Times bestselling author Sheila Connolly introduces the first novel in the County Cork mystery series—set in a small village in Ireland where buried secrets are about to rise to the surface...Honoring the wish of her late grandmother, Maura Donovan visits the small Irish village where her Gran was born—though she never expected to get bogged down in a murder mystery. Nor had she planned to take a job in one of the local pubs, but she finds herself excited to get to know the people who knew her Gran.  In the pub, she’s swamped with drink orders as everyone in town gathers to talk about the recent discovery of a nearly one-hundred-year-old body in a nearby bog. When Maura realizes she may know something about the dead man—and that the body’s connected to another, more recent, death—she fears she’s about to become mired in a homicide investigation. After she discovers the death is connected to another from almost a century earlier, Maura has a sinking feeling she may really be getting in over her head...

Book Buried In a Bog (County Cork series Book 1) Review :

I've just finished reading the 5 books of the series and this review applies to all of them (I will never make the mistake of purchasing a series without having read anything by the author before). I gave the second star only because the premise of the series was a good idea - too bad Sheila Connolly had it and did it no justice at all. To begin with, the main character is unrealistic and unlikeable. A contemporary 25 year old American raised in a city and above the poverty line without a computer or a smartphone but even a phone with a camera? Riiight. Maura Donovan also ups and leaves the US for what she intends to be a week and when her stay is prolonged there is nobody she feels she has to inform because apparently the "few friends" she left behind were not that important. Even if she did stash boxes of her belongings in the attic of one of those friends. Maura is annoying, negative, often rude and appears to have no interests at all. Music? She's not into it. Movies? She doesn't watch much TV. Her Gran's life in the old country? Who cares. Cooking? Nope. Books, hobbies, anything? Nothing is mentioned. Apart from the irritating protagonist, the writing also gets repetitive and annoying. "Show, not tell" does not apply in this series. A scene takes place and three pages later the reader gets to read it descibed again, in Maura's obnoxious inner monologue. Not to mention how many times things like "we take care of our own" "we watch out for each other" "etc. etc. are repeated. Yes, we get it, Leap is apparently the Smurfs village. Finally, the 'mysteries' are a disappointment, especially those where the crime is done by a character introduced only at the ending. Lame, Ms Connolly. The other saving grace of the books was the presence of a couple decent secondary characters, like Old Billy. But even that is not enough to justify recommending the series.
I have finished reading all 8 of the original County Cork series and the readers’ reviews on the newer offerings. The earlier books get a lot of positive comments; however, in agreement with the reviewers on the later books, all of the County Cork books in the series suffer from dismal editing. And constant repetition, repetition, repetition. And commitments by the characters to take a course of action with no follow through so the same problem is revisited later as if for the first time. And characters misnamed. And snarky dialogue. And a host of other editorial issues. In one paragraph, Maura asks Rose to get a cup of coffee for a customer but just two lines earlier Rose had left the pub to get lunch. Very, very sloppy writing. I’ve come to believe the books receive good reviews because the characters and the plot lines are interesting and hold promise. Both are just unforgivably mistreated. Considering all the books Sheila Connelly has written, she appears to be sacrificing quality for quantity...at least in this series. Unfortunate.
